Making Money Online, At Home, and With Blogging

Don’t Lose Focus

Remember that your blog must have a business plan - a focus - a point of consideration. This goal is the entire point of your blog. If your blogging helps achieve this in the most efficient way possible, then go a head and keep blogging. But always entertain the idea that blogging isn’t justified.

For example, if you are targeting search engine traffic especially, and are getting no search engine traffic at all, your number one priority should be SEO. If the package that you earn your income from is based on raw new visitors, the fact that this is important can’t be overstated.

If you base your blog on an affiliate program, or a store, or the like - every secondary in come is just that: secondary. Have a focus for your blog, and unleash the revenue. Diversity is fantastic, but sometimes it pays off to literally put all of your eggs in one basket.

Getting Work Done At Home

When you are a work at home mom with kids it is sometimes hard to get any work done .
You need to start telling them when they are young that you work like other people , you just stay at home and do it. They understand that mom works at home and dad works out of the home. They will most likely not interrupt you at work, because they can easily understand the idea of it being an actual job.
Make sure you set time aside to be with your kids. Divide your time up into times when you can do some of your work when the kids are around , Like crafts, but make sure your kids know the times not to bother you, like when you are writing.
Set goals with your kids. For example - If they are wanting to do something with you - tell them that you cannot stop what you are doing until you get 2 wreaths made, or 5 pages written , or something else concrete ! They can deal with that better than just saying leave me alone or just a minute. When my son was little I would tell him just a minute and he would stand at the door and count to 60!! He did not bother me when I told him what I was doing and my goal!
You could even use a timer . Set it for like 30 minutes and then your kids know that when that timer goes off they will have your full attention.
All of these tips help me and they should help you.

Your Blogging Calendar!

What you write about throughout the year can sometimes be hard. You get busy with your daily life or you get writer’s block. Why not make it easy and go month by month. You can take what is happening in each month ,such as holidays, to come up with great things to write.
For example: With it being December , why not write about the best toys to get kids for Christmas. Write about holiday meal planning, holiday crafts, party planning, and so on. You can do this each month. Just look through the calendar and you will see what holidays are in each month and come up with some really great ideas.
The great thing about this is that we all have calendar and you will never run out of things to write about. You can also add other things that happen throughout the year that are not on your calendar, like the first day of school.
You will never have writer’s block again if you look at the calendar as inspiration.

Blog Success

Start a blog on your favorite topic, This way you will not run out of content. First write down 10 blog posts off-line and see how you are doing. If you find difficulty to write enough content on that topic, then try to write on some other topic. The best thing to do is, first read some blogs on that particular topic. Do some research, search for blogs on that topic and see what others are doing. Then don’t just copy other blogs, but understand that topic properly. After that you will find it easy to write more on that particular topic.

Don’t start a blog with one or two entries. At-least make 10 posts on the blog’s launch day. A blog with some decent content always makes a good impression. If you do this, then you will have readers from the first day of the launch.

Content is king! Check for grammatical and spellings errors off line, before publishing the blog. Good content brings natural links, so it is always advised to write properly.

The next step is to add the feeds. Check out feed burner and get your feeds running. You can see on the right sidebar, I have the feed subscription buttons placed there.

Try the blog top sites. This is a great way to bring in some more traffic.

Promote your blog with social bookmarking. To start with, join technorati, del.icio.us ,digg, stumbleupon, reddit and others. This is an easy way to get traffic and get your blog out there for the world to see.

Frequently visit other blogs of your niche. When ever you see a new post, read it properly and give a good comment on it. Don’t post spam comments; make a nice comment that gets accepted. Some blogs are no-follow and some are not. This step can help you get a lot of targeted readers apart from the link popularity. You can even give blogroll links to a few of the good blogs that you regularly visit.

Try to post regularly, if you don’t post regularly, then you will lose a lot of subscription and regular readers. If you are blogging about something that you are passionate about then it will come easily. When it comes easy and you are having fun with it you will find that the readers come more and more and so will the money that you are hoping to make with blogging.

Writer’s Block

Everyone who blogs gets writer’s block sooner or later. It is hard to come up with stuff to write so often.
I have found that changing my view, literally, helps me a lot. Go somewhere that you do not usually go to. People Watch. Watch what others are doing. You will get thousands of writing ideas.
I got a ton of ideas just from going to the laundry yesterday. There are some pretty different people at the laundry and I found myself sitting there and making up little stories about why they were there and How did their clothes get dirty. Lucky I keep a small notebook in my handbag ,because I almost filled it up with ideas.
My daughter loves to go to the mall and get ideas for writing. My son loves to just surf the internet. It is also a good idea to read the newspaper. I also read a lot of different magazines.
Sometimes I get ideas for things to write from other blogs. I have several that I subscribe too and I am always on the lookout for new blogs to read.

I hope that if you ever get writer’s block that you just take it easy and get out of house and look around you. Stop and smell the roses.

Kids want to blog also !!!

My kids watch me blog all of the time and they decided they want to blog also. I use the word kids lightly because one is 18 and the other is 14!! I do have a 9 month old ,but I expect it will be a few years before he will want his own blog!

My son(14) started a blog a while ago about his interest in the dark ages and medevil times. He is a history buff and has plans to be a history teacher. His blog ,Dark Ages , has info about historical figures and places from that time in history. He has not wrote on it for a while, though and is in the process of researching some new stuff that he is wanting to write about.

My daughter(18) started her blog just this morning and it looks like it is going to be an awesome blog. It is about her love for fashion, writing , and more. Her Blog, Dress-Up Isn’t Just For Little Girls Anymore, is new ,but I can see where it will be going and it looks like it will go far. We will see.

They of course will most likely be wanting to try and make money from their blogs. Which would be cool. My daughter will be leaving for college in a year. My son has a few years to worry about college ,but why not start saving now.

Top 10 Blog Writing Tips

Most of the “rules” about writing for ezines and newsletters apply to writing posts for your blog, but there are some important differences. Keep these 10 tips in mind and you’ll be publishing great blog content that attracts prospects and clients in your niche market.

1. Write with the reader in mind. Remember WIIFM? It’s marketing jargon for What’s In It For Me? That’s what you should be keeping in mind. Your reader will read your post looking for what’s in it for them.

2. Make it valuable and worthwhile. Don’t waste people’s time. If you don’t have anything to say, no problem, plenty other people do. So share their articles, do an interview, review a book.

3. Proof-read for typos and glaring grammatical errors. You wouldn’t go out of the house with dirty hair or missing a sock, so why would you publish spelling mistakes? Respect your readers by polishing up your stuff.

4. Keep it short and simple, sweetie. (KISS). Most people are scanners. You may have a lot to say and think it interesting, and it may be. But people are reading online and out of time. Get to the point quickly. Publishing short posts more frequently is a better format than publishing lengthy articles every few weeks.

5. Keep it lively, make it snappy and snazzy. Even if you aren’t a natural born writer, you can write for your blog. Just write like you’re speaking to your friend…or to yourself! Remember though, get to the point quickly. Keep in mind the journalist’s rule of 5 W’s in the first paragraph: who, what, why, when and where.

6. Link often. This builds credibility and positions you as an expert in your field. People don’t have time to know what others are doing, you should tell them. Linking to other blogs and websites also helps you build a network of associates who will in turn link to your blog.

7. Use keywords often. This will help you stay on purpose, and the search engines will love your blog. Your rankings will go up. This is one of the reasons we have you write out your purpose statements before beginning your blog. The clearer you are about your purpose, the more consistently you will deliver messages that are on target. And the more often your keywords show up, the better your search engine results.

8. Write clearly (short sentences, only one concept per sentence). No double speak or jargon; no more than one idea in one sentence- don’t make your readers have to think about your meaning. Spoon feed them. Use commas and dashes liberally.

9. Write like you talk. It’s okay to use common expressions from speech.

Examples:

Go figure.

Don’t even go there…

Now, I ask you…

Gotta love it…

(And, remember the age group of your readers…)

10. Use a clear headline, and don’t be afraid to make bold statements (but don’t mislead people either). Make it snazzy and use key words. Example: Ex-Techno-Weenie Masters HTML Code

BONUS: After you write a post and BEFORE you hit the save button

Use this checklist to ask yourself a few questions as you are reading through for typos and grammar:

__ Is the topic clear to someone who only reads the headline?

__Does the lead paragraph tell who and what the story is about and why the reader should care about it?

__ Is the angle you’ve used likely to seem newsworthy?

__Would someone who knows absolutely nothing about this topic understand this post?

__ Is the post free of jargon?

__ Is it written in journalistic style and does it make an effort to be objective?

__ Have you peppered the headline and the post with keywords and phrases that will be attractive to search engines?

__ Did you remember to ask your readers a question at the end, or something to stimulate readers to comment?

__ Did you remember to write with the reader in mind, always keeping in mind WIIFT? (What’s in It for Them?)

Relax and Recharge!

Is that a thing that you have not done in a while?? I know I have not ,but it is something that we all need to do every once in a while. Yesterday was Valentine’s Day and I spent the day working and it dawned on me last night while I was TRYING to go to sleep - that I never get to relax. To remain productive when we do work we need to relax. Being in a creative work field ,and for others who work at home , we need to relax so we can get our creative juices flowing. If you have writer’s (or blogger’s) block than relax for a while and get away from the keyboard. The creative sparks usually ignites at unexpected moments , when we are relaxed and feeling no pressure.

WAHM TIP OF THE DAY

Tip for the day: MAKE SURE YOU ALWAYs HAVE A NOTEBOOK NEARBY SO YOU CAN WRITE DOWN IDEAS AND THOUGHTS AS THEY COME TO MIND!!!! For us bloggers and writers a blank notebook is priceless. I am always writing in mine with ideas and plans. I also write list of what I need to do and goals.
A notebook is also a great way to keep track of what you have done already. This way you do not write the same thing twice or submit the same article over and over. I can get pretty forgetful so if I did not have a notebook for keeping my thoughts straight I would not be able to blog or write. I am just too busy and the notebook keeps everything where I need it.

I use the type of notebook that has folders built in so if I see an article or project somewhere else I can cut it out and put it in my notebook.
